Background

As someone who grew up in Davis, California, I often walked and biked around the UC Davis campus. One of my favorite things about UC Davis is the art on campus known as the Eggheads, a series of 5 sculptures created by UC Davis professor Robert Arneson. Below are photos I have taken of each of the Egghead sculptures, some of which include my dog Abby.

Bookhead

Located in front of UC Davis' main library, Bookhead depicts a scholar's face being buried into a book.

Eye on Mrak (Fatal Laff)

Eye on Mrak is located in the middle of the quad in front of Mrak hall, UC Davis' main administration building. It faces outwards towards the library with a laughing upside down face, and has an eye in the back of its head that faces towards Mrak Hall to watch it. According to UC Davis's website, Eye on Mrak is the most popular sculpture for students to photograph.

See no Evil / Hear no Evil

Located in the middle of a roundabout by Mrak Hall, See No Evil / Hear No Evil depicts two eggheads speaking to each other. They are the only egghead sculptures that have no ears, and each have one eye closed so they don't see "eye to eye". The two heads are identical.

Yin & Yang

Located in front of Wright Hall, Yin & Yang depicts one egghead yelling at another who is lying down, half-asleep.

Stargazer

Just beyond the original gates of UC Davis (near the intersection of 2nd street and A street) is Stargazer, an egghead that gazes up into the stars with spiral eyes.

Museum Display

UC Davis celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Egghead sculpture series by opening a temporary museum exhibit during 2024 that I visited. There were several prototype models created by Professor Arneson, with some of them differing significantly from the final sculptures.

Graduation

The egghead sculptures are the perfect spot to take a graduation photo.
